Rolled to perfection for immaculate sanding results!

Abrasive rolls are ideal for smoothing, cleaning and refining surfaces. Klingspor’s extensive product range holds both continuous and slashed abrasive rolls for off-hand sanding and use on handheld machines during the processing of a wide variety of materials - from wood to metal to varnish.

Along with abrasive belts, sheets, strips and discs, abrasive rolls are grouped in the product family of “coated abrasives”, which are usually composed of four to five components:

  • Backing
  • Base coat
  • Abrasive grain
  • Top size coat
  • Optional: Active agent coating

The type and combination of these individual components has a decisive effect on the abrasive properties of the final product.

The backings - made of paper or cloth

The backing carries the abrasive grain and transmits the cutting forces onto the workpiece. For the manufacturing of their abrasive rolls, Klingspor primarily uses paper or cotton cloth.

The paper backings of the abrasive rolls vary in their grammage and therefore in their flexibility and their resistance to tearing. Abrasive rolls with particularly light backings are suited primarily for such sanding tasks as surface sanding, for which tear resistance is of minor importance. The greater the mass per unit area, the lower the flexibility and the greater the tear resistance.

Anyone looking for a robust, yet flexible abrasive that is capable of processing even heavily profiled workpieces with ease should, however, opt for abrasive rolls with cloth backings. Abrasive rolls with a cotton backing are highly flexible and tear-resistant and shape perfectly to the contours of the workpiece. There are also special products such as non-woven web rolls or paper with a foam coating, which snugly contour to the surfaces of the workpiece as well.

For perfect sanding results – high-quality abrasive grain with a close, semi-open and open coating

The abrasive grain is responsible for stock removal and is anchored in the base coat. All types of abrasive grain used by Klingspor are the product of a synthetic manufacturing process. This choice of grain allows Klingspor to guarantee quality of consistent excellence. The question as to which grain is the best choice depends on the material to be sanded. The general rule is: The harder the material to be sanded is, the harder the abrasive grain needs to be. Klingspor primarily uses silicone carbide (abbreviated as: SiC) and corundum (aluminium oxide) for their abrasive rolls.

Silicon carbide grain is very hard and brittle. The benefit of this grain is that it breaks off with exceptionally sharp edges and therefore sands with great aggressiveness. Silicon carbide is a good choice for sanding exceedingly hard materials, e.g. stone or glass, and work on such exceptionally soft materials as plastic or leather.

Corundum is a grain that is hard and yet also tough. Wearing down evenly, this grain creates sanding surfaces of particularly uniform quality. It is, for instance, suitable for sanding wood, metal and NF metal.

In addition to the backing and the grain, the coating density defines the properties of the abrasive rolls. During production, Klingspor applies the grains to the backing with a close, a semi-open or an open coating. The coating density will leave a greater or a smaller number of spaces between the grains. Abrasive rolls with an open coating are ideally suited for sanding wood, as it offers a greater chip clearance, providing for the best possible collection and discharge of abrasive dust and therefore keeping the abrasive from clogging up.

More than just colour - top size coats and active agent coatings

The top size coat made of synthetic resin provides for a secure anchoring of the abrasive coat in the backing material and therefore a longer service life. At the same time, it serves as an additional shield against the forces acting on the grain during sanding and gives the product its typical colour.

Active agent coatings are applied as an additional component and give the abrasive properties that have a positive impact on service life and the sanding process. Klingspor’s product range offers abrasive rolls with stearate coating and ACT technology.

The coatings prevent / slow down the clogging of the abrasive surface with abrasive dust and the need to replace the abrasive prematurely.

Depending on the materials used and the combination of the individual components, Klingspor’s selection of abrasive rolls is ideal for the processing of:

  • Wood
  • Paint
  • Varnish
  • Metal
